Butchie probably hid it there in case the parents searched his room and forgot about it...
"It happened so quick. I mean, it was boom, boom, boom. From the first killing to the last, it never took any longer than seven seconds,
it would be alot, that would have been alot. Seven seconds." - Ronald J. DeFeo Jr.

It's a strange place to stash something like that - but then Butchie was a strange guy - so I guess anythings possible.
I've read nothing previously to suggest that Allison (or Dawn) were anything like Ronnie in habits or attitude
I wish I had the nerve not to tip...

None of the Defeo's had simular mindsets to Ronnie...
Unless you want to count in Big Ronnie for having an
apparent short fuse, but you cannot blame the guy...
If you had to put up with a child like Ronnie then you
would have a short fuse too.

I wonder how long it would take, after Ronnie DeFeo died, for the internet to announce it. Ronnie DeFeo is no Night Stalker. He's no David Berkowitz (Son of Sam). Ronnie's infamy is limited to "The Amityville Horror", and only devotees like us give a shitake, or even remember him.

When Richard Ramirez died, it took me a week or more to find out. I wonder if Ronnie's demise would take longer?

I'm a little late in asking...but where did you read that? I've read and re-read High Hopes, and never saw that passage.

I think he meant to say Dawn's room and it was a syringe. The police inventory lists the spoon with white powder being found in Ron's dresser drawer. A syringe was found in Dawn's dresser and was also found in another house location but the log doesn't detail where the other syringe and hypodermic needle was recovered.

Maybe Dawn had diabetes? (If it was hypodermic) or maybe
it was from her childhood? I used to have a syringe (not hypo)
for taking liquid medicines/milk.
