Exploration of the Paranormal In The 1970s

Postby sswusfc » Tue Aug 30, 2011 2:51 pm

First off, anyone who says the paranormal was not explored during the 1970s has forgotten that the Bermuda Triangle, In Search of Jesus, The Shroud of Turin, In Search of Noah's Ark, and Close Encounters were among the titles produced by the 1970s. There was a fair amount of it. It also has to be remembered that back in the late 1950s, a very famous poltergeist case involving an adolescent in Seaford occurred.

What does that have to do with the Amityville case? Many people were into the paranormal in the 70s, including allegations that George and Kathy were as well from one of their kids.

Indeed, seances and mediums were all the rage in the 1920s. People have been into the paranormal throughout the ages.

Shakespeare and even the Bible have tons of references to the paranormal. It's been around since the beginning of humankind.

I am not trying to be some smart alec or start trouble, I just wish to understand
a bit better what you mean by your statement.

God, himself, is a paranormal entity. As are the angels and demons mentioned throughout the Bible. As are the miracles -- they are paranormal events.

The Bible is filled with paranormal accounts. Jesus cast out the demons from the person to the swine. Jesus's miracles would be considered paranormal according to the definition of the word. Jesus rose from the dead, another paranormal event.

I suppose that makes sense if you look at
it that way. Thanks for answering:)

It depends on how you define the paranormal. The definition is anything that can't explained within the current day scientific knowledge. Supernatural and paranormal can be different things. UFOs are considered paranormal events, but not necessarily supernatural events. If UFOs happen to be based on technology that are ages ahead of us and alien beings are mortal (plenty of reports of deceased aliens beings) then there are nothing supernatural about UFOs

I am quite aware of what the definition of Paranormal
is Victoria. Thank you for sharing. I however do not
see God and the Bible as a paranormal oddity or some
paranormal entity. To me they exist in my faith very
strongly, which is of course, my choice :)

God is very dear to me and I am happy with my choice:)

Saying something is "supernatural" doesn't mean "it doesn't exist." God is by definition a supernatural being, whether he exists or not. He can create the universe and perform miracles and magic. Only other person I know who can do that is John Foland (when he's not in jail).

"The Paranormal" consists of things, phenomena or actions which are beyond the understanding of science. That also totally fits in with God and a bunch of stuff talked about in the Bible (the miracles, the angels & demons, etc).

Both these terms are not negative or positive. It's not calling God a bad name or something. It's just a description of it's relationship with our current scientific understanding of how the world works.

I will tell you the same thing Dan I am perfectly
aware of what the term supernatural means.
I am an intelligent person and perfectly capable
of reasoning things out.

I realize that not everyone believes as I do
and that is fine. It is called free will, having the
power to make their own choices.

My choice is to believe that God is an integral
part of my life and does wonderful things for me.
My only wish is to share what he has done with those
who would lend me an ear.

And the wonderful thing about that is, it was and
is my choice:)

One of the events in the Bible that would certainly be considered "paranormal" in the supernatural sense is King Saul's visit to the witch of EnDor, who conjures the spirit of Samuel so that Saul can communicate with him.

Moreover, the prophets of the Bible are called "seers" in Hebrew, and they perceive things through subjective visions and thusly predict the future. They are the equivalent of modern day psychics - the only difference being that the Bible portrays them as speaking specifically on behalf of Yahweh (while other cultures had their own prophets/seers who spoke on behalf of their gods, i.e. the Prophets of Baal in 2 Kings).
