AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING

Postby Dan the Damned » Sat May 14, 2011 8:33 pm

Days after the announcement of Amityville: The Legacy comes yet another announcement for yet another Amityville sequel. Reminds me of 2004 when there were 2 or 3 Amityville movies announced with only one surviving:

Dimension, Miramax to Investigate Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes

Source: Shock Till You Drop • May 14, 2011

Dimension Films and Miramax today announced the production of The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes.

This is the first film to be produced under the agreement between Miramax and The Weinstein Company to create sequels to some of Miramax's various properties.

Dimension also announced that it has acquired the rights to a new screenplay for the film by Casey La Scala and Daniel Farrands (Never Sleep Again, Halloween 6). Farrands and La Scala are also set to direct the film.

Production will commence this summer with a release date scheduled for January 27, 2012.

The latest chapter in the Amityville saga showcases the...

Read the full article here (contains film synopsis). This is said to be a totally different project from The Amityville Tapes which was announced by MGM 3 years ago (and most likely shelved).

So do Miramax have the rights to do a sequel? Or is this perhaps part of that 3-picture deal with Dimension which George talked about 8 years ago?

Probably the latter, as its not a direct sequel, but either way it sounds more "legit" than Legacy...

Anyway, a "found footage" movie with Dan involved? Look forward to it!

How do you mean "not a direct sequel"?

As in I doubt they will bother to re-create the 2005 house.

Or that any images of George and Kathy will resemble Ryan Reynalds/Melissa George.

Although it's interesting the word "horror" appears to be in this one.

So this would be more like a documentary then?

If so It would be interesting to watch. I would
imagine that they would base this on the facts
according to George's testimony?

I was under the impression that this movie was about a team of investigators going into the house(present day) and taping everything...then disappearing leaving their tapes behind. Sort of like The Blair Witch. I read this someplace and then reading Dan's link that feeling returns.

I don't like these found footage films so much but as it is Amity it might be interesting...should have something close to the ghost boy photo in this if they can swing it without getting in any doo doo.

i hope this film does not turn into some kind
circus like the last one did. I would like to see
a nice, fact filled informative show.

Just by reading the synopsis you can plainly see it will not be "fact-filled" or "informative." Nor is it meant to be. It's a regular fictional movie. Just for fun.

Producer Jason Blum is a veteran of the Paranormal Activity 1 & 2 films, so expect Amityville tapes to follow through in the lo-fi spirit of those cash cows. What’s most intriguing about this concept is the 1976 period; will the intrepid wannabe Lois Lane stumble across a pile of brand-new Betamaxes? Sift through ghostly phenomena snapped by someone’s Kodak Instamatic? If so, this could prove just as nostalgic for film and photo nerds as J.J. Abrams’ Super 8.

Casey La Scala (producer of films including Donnie Darko and director of Grind)and Daniel Farrands (writer of The Girl Next Door and director of horror docs including Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy and His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th) will co-script and co-direct the film. The Amityville Horror: The Lost Tapes will open January 27, 2012.

It's funny since the remake how many Amityville related movies have been announced to be made... yet I haven't seen anything released. I'm not holding my breath for this one lol I wouldn't mind seeing another film or two, whether they are based on "truth" or not, but, I wish something would get released already.

Out of all of the "films" being made, I think the "Legacy" movie peaks my interest most.

after seeing the remake, I wont hold my breath either.

If memory serves me, one of the producers of the show
made a comment.."I want the truth to be known, thats why
I made this film" or something to that effect.

I spit my drink all over the place when I heard that.

Yeah they really screwed people with the remake. Don't get me wrong, as a film, it's enjoyable I think. However, all of the interviews with the cast and crew with them talking about "How much it's based on the truth/book" and then seeing the film being NOT about the book almost at all, I was highly dissapointed.

If they hadn't promoted it as a "true story" I might have liked it more, but the fact that they lied made it less-worthy to me. But as far as Amityville: The Legacy, it sounds really interesting, and it's clearly not based on fact, so it'll just be a fantasy-movie, which is fine with me. I enjoyed Amityville 4, 1992, New Generation, and even Dollhouse... so "The Legacy" sounds like it could be up my alley.

But as I said, until I start seeing it being filmed and made, I'm not gonna hold my breath.

You're right. There was absolutely no need for them to pretend the remake was "more accurate than the original." And it may have served them better if they simply said from the get-go how this was "a re-imagining of the original."

you know..with my talent for writing, perhaps I could collaborate with Chris Lutz and
write a story that is a little more accurate?

The idea has merit :)

bait you? I do not understand.

There was no hidden agenda in my post. I simply
meant I have a talent for writing and thought
perhaps I could write a book on this.

No big deal...
